Keeping Children in School: Protecting South Sudan’s Future

Stories of how education support is helping vulnerable children access learning and build brighter futures.
Access to quality education can open doors to a brighter future. For many children in South Sudan, however, that door remains closed — by poverty, displacement, long distances to school, and the daily pressure on families to put food on the table before books in a bag.
At African Children's Foundation Organization (ACFO), we believe no child should have to choose between surviving and learning. Our education programme walks alongside vulnerable children and their families, removing the barriers that keep young people out of the classroom one by one.

Education sponsorship is the backbone of our work. Each sponsored child receives school fees, uniforms, and scholastic materials for the full academic year, and our field officers check in with teachers and caregivers every term to make sure support is translating into attendance and progress.
This year, sponsored children who had previously dropped out returned to classrooms across Juba. Several are now among the top performers in their classes.
The foundation for learning is laid long before primary school. Through our Early Childhood Care and Development work, we support play-based learning groups where younger children build language, counting, and social skills with trained local facilitators.
Mothers and caregivers take part too, learning simple ways to support early learning at home — storytelling, counting games, and daily routines that prepare children for their first day of school.

Books and fees matter, but so does what happens inside a child. Many of the children we serve carry the weight of loss and displacement. Our teachers and volunteers are trained in psychosocial support and peace education, helping classrooms become places where children feel safe enough to learn.
When a child feels safe, seen, and supported, learning follows naturally.
We promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education for children and young people, helping create opportunities for them to learn, grow, and reach their potential. Every scholarship, every exercise book, and every home visit is a step toward a South Sudan where every child can build their own future.
