Keeping Children in School: Protecting South Sudan’s Future

New classrooms and learning materials are helping more children stay in school across Juba.
When a classroom is overcrowded, has no roof, or simply does not exist, children lose the chance to learn — no matter how motivated they are. Across the communities where ACFO works, families consistently name access to quality education as their first priority for their children.
This year we have been working with schools, parents, and local authorities in Juba to expand what "access" really means: enough space to sit, materials to write with, and teachers equipped to teach.

Working with school management committees, we supported the rehabilitation of learning spaces that had fallen into disrepair. Repaired roofs, patched walls, and new chalkboards may sound simple, but they change the daily experience of hundreds of learners who previously crowded into unsafe rooms or studied under trees during the rainy season.
A child without an exercise book spends the lesson watching others learn. Our scholastic materials distribution reached children with the basics that make participation possible: exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, and mathematical sets.
Teachers report that attendance improves after distributions — children who stayed home out of embarrassment return when they have what they need to take part.

None of this works without families. Parent-teacher associations in our partner schools now meet regularly to plan improvements, monitor attendance, and support struggling learners. When parents lead, changes last long after any single project ends.
A school that belongs to its community never stands alone.
Expanding access is a long road, and demand still outstrips what any single organization can provide. We are committed to reaching more schools, training more teachers, and standing with more families until every child in the communities we serve has a real place to learn.
