Keeping Children in School: Protecting South Sudan’s Future

Environmental action and WASH support are helping communities care for shared resources.
Children inherit the land, water, and trees we leave behind. In the communities where ACFO works, environmental pressures — deforestation, unreliable rains, and unsafe water — are already shaping what childhood looks like: longer walks to fetch water, dust where shade used to be, and sickness from contaminated sources.
Our environment and WASH work helps communities protect the natural resources their children depend on.

Clean, reliable water changes everything. We work with communities to protect and maintain water points, train water user committees, and promote household water treatment and safe storage.
When water is close and safe, children — especially girls — spend less time carrying jerrycans and more time in class.
School environment clubs are restoring trees around their compounds, one planting day at a time. Trees mean shade for outdoor lessons, protection from wind and dust, and a living lesson in stewardship that students carry home.

Good sanitation protects health and dignity alike. Our hygiene promotion work supports handwashing stations, latrine care, and menstrual hygiene management so that schools are places every child can attend comfortably, every day of the month.
A healthy environment is not a luxury. For children, it is the difference between thriving and just surviving.
Environmental care is long-term work — trees take years to grow and habits take seasons to form. We are committed to standing with schools and communities for that long haul, protecting land and water for the next generation.
